IELTS Overview
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized English language proficiency test designed for non-native speakers. It is primarily aimed at individuals who wish to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. Established in 1989, IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP Education, and Cambridge Assessment English, and it has become one of the most popular language tests worldwide, with over four million test takers annually.
Test Versions
IELTS offers two main versions:
- IELTS Academic: Intended for those seeking admission to universities or higher education institutions in English-speaking countries. It assesses whether candidates are ready for academic study.
- IELTS General Training: Designed for those who are going to English-speaking countries for secondary education, work experience, or training programs. It also serves as a requirement for immigration purposes.
Test Format
The IELTS test consists of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The total test duration is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
- Listening: Lasts about 30 minutes and involves four recorded sections, including conversations and monologues.
- Reading: Takes 60 minutes and consists of three sections with a variety of texts. The Academic version includes texts suitable for higher education, while the General Training version features more everyday contexts.
- Writing: Also lasts 60 minutes and includes two tasks. Task 1 requires candidates to describe visual information or write a letter, while Task 2 involves writing an essay in response to a point of view or argument.
- Speaking: Conducted as a face-to-face interview with an examiner, lasting 11-14 minutes. It consists of three parts: an introduction and interview, a long turn where the candidate speaks on a given topic, and a discussion related to the topic.
Scoring
IELTS scores range from 0 to 9, with each section contributing equally to the overall band score. Scores are valid for two years and are accepted by over 12,000 organizations worldwide, including universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies.
